Annual Report of the Director of Public Health 2007 to 2008

Report from the Director of Public Health 2007/08

Annual Public Health Report CoverThis year’s Annual Public Health Report pulls together data about the wider determinants of health, and health inequalities, from a wide range of sources including educational achievement, worklessness and income, general practice performance, public health and social care issues, and local hospital data.

Due to the large size of the report, it has been separated into chapters which you can download from the Documents box to the right.

Parts A and B (documents 1 & 2 and 3) consider Southwark’s socio-demographics and the wider determinants of health.

Part C (documents 4,5,6,7 and 8) examines the main causes of poor health and death, in particular cardio-vascular diseases (CVD) – which include coronary heart disease (CHD) and stroke – cancers, hypertension, diabetes and respiratory health.

Part D (documents 9,10,11,12 and 13) looks at some key groups of population: older people, adults with physical and sensory impairment, adults with learning disabilities, adults with mental health problems and carers.

The report identifies the high level strategic priorities for commissioning based on population needs and evidence of what works to improve population health and reduce health inequalities, and contributes to Southwark’s on-going Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA).

Each topic ends with a short summary of key issues, makes recommendations for the JSNA process, and highlights priorities for commissioning services.

These will form part of the JSNA consultation planned for Autumn 2008.
