Screening

Cancer in the family?

Having a simple test - even when you have no symptoms, is the best way to catch illness early. Screening is a public health priority in Southwark. It is offered for the most common types of diseases, and in particular 'at risk' age ranges.  Some screening tests for evidence of disease and others test for high risk factors such as family history. Find out about our special programme for those with a family history of cancers.

Diseases that are commonly screened for

Not all diseases are screened for, but it has been proved to be a particularly good method of looking for abnormalities which might lead to breast, cervical and bowel cancers.

Chlamydia screening

We also run a screening programme for chlamydia which is now a very common sexually transmitted infection which can cause infertility if it goes untreated. Find out more about chlamydia and how to get yourself checked.

Other types of screening

There are many other types of screening which you may be recommneded for. Some people, depending on their age and family history may have bowel or porstate cancer screening. You may have ante-natal screening whist you are pregant, or you and your child may have further screening when your child is newborn. The NHS screening website provides guidance on these and other screening programmes.
