Cervical Screening

Cervical cancer is the second highest cancer cause of death among women globally. All Women in Southwark aged 25 to 50 should attend smear tests every three years in order to flag up signs of abnormal cells in the cervix, with women over 50 recalled every five years. Opportunistic screening is provided for women under 25 if they are sexually active. Under 25s can also request screening at their surgery. All women in this age bracket are invited for a smear test by their GP. However nearly 30% of eligible women don’t go. Cervical screening is not a test for cancer. It is a method of preventing cancer by detecting and treating early abnormalities which, if left untreated, could lead to cancer in a woman's cervix (the neck of the womb). Early detection and treatment can prevent 75% of cancers developing. If you have questions or concerns you can speak to your GP, or your questions might be answered by downloading the leaflet below. Women wishing to book a smear test appointment should contact their local GP practice or local family planning clinic.
