Bermondsey & Rotherhithe has the highest percentage of White people of all four localities — 71% compared to the Southwark average of 62%. 20% of the population is Black (compared to 40% in Peckham & Camberwell) and 3% Asian. There is much variation by ward, eg:

  • Livesey: 50% White, 40% Black
  • Surrey Docks: 81% White, 8.5% Black.

The percentage of pupils aged 15 achieving five or more GCSE/GNVQ passes at grades A*-C for individual schools and Southwark and national averages, for the three secondary schools in Bermondsey & Rotherhithe:

Unemployment
Generally higher than Southwark as a whole, which itself is higher than nationally. Livesey ward had the highest rate (7.4 per 1000 working population — Jan 2005).

Crime
In 2005 there were high levels of reported crimes of burglary, robbery, drug offences and violence against the person in Bermondsey & Rotherhithe compared to the whole of the area covered by the Metropolitan Police, and the borough average. Within the locality the crime rates varied greatly by area:

  • Grange ward had the highest rate of burglary offences per 1,000 population than any other ward within the borough
  • Livesey ward had the highest rate of drug offences per 1,000 population than any other ward within the borough
  • All wards within the Bermondsey & Rotherhithe locality had higher rates of both drug offences and sexual offences per 1,000 population than Southwark and the Met area, with the exception of Surrey Docks ward, which had lower rates for both.
