Deprivation
With the exception of some riverside regeneration areas, most of B&R is among the 30% most deprived areas in the country (IMD = Index of Multiple Deprivation).
Housing tenure
As with Southwark as a whole, B&R has a high proportion of homes rented either from the Council or other social landlord. In Livesey ward 79% of homes are rented in this way — the highest proportion in the borough — and only 14% are owner-occupied. By contrast, in Surrey Docks 28% are social housing and 44% are owner-occupied.
Overcrowding
In the 2001 census, 26% of B&R households were defined as ‘overcrowded’ compared with 25% for Southwark as a whole and 7% nationally.
