Recommendations

1.  Primary care contract teams should explore the possibility of, and investigate funding for, the development of a Locally Enhanced Service to identify harmful drinking patterns early, and enable brief interventions to take place in more effective surroundings.

2.  The number of Southwark employers with effective workplace alcohol policies, support services and health promotion activities should be increased. This could be rolled out through the Chamber of Commerce via Southwark Alliance. A standardised self-assessment toolkit should be developed to support this, with advice and help available from specialised agencies.

3.  Southwark Alliance, through its Safer Southwark Partnership and Healthy Southwark, should consider and respond to issues raised from the evaluation ofthe new Licensing Act, particularly in the areas of binge drinking and crime and disorder in the borough.

 4.  Health and social care commissioners and service planners should develop action plans for implementing the National Service Framework for Alcohol Treatment Services, Models of Care for Alcohol Misusers, which sets out best practice guidance for local health organisations and their partners in delivering a planned and integrated local treatment system for adult alcohol users.
