Recommendations

1.  The Immunisation & Vaccination Facilitator, through the Locality I&V Leads, should ensure full support for health visitors and practices in implementing the new primary immunisation schedule.

2.  Immunisation uptake across Southwark should be mapped using hotspot analysis and services targeted accordingly. Priority should be given to MMR, BCG and flu.

3.  MMR:

  • The I&V facilitator, through Locality I&V Leads, should work with the lowest uptake practices and their linked health visitor teams to develop detailed action plans.
  • Low uptake groups should be tackled through targeted social marketing.
  • Opportunistic MMR immunisations should be increased.
  • A process should be set up to validate the HV birth book details with practice list details.

4.  BCG:

The catch-up programme for Years 9 & 10 should be taken forward in the next academic year (06/07). BCG vaccinations should also be continued during the holidays through locality clinics.

5.  Seasonal flu:

The I&V facilitator and pharmacy lead should work with practices to ensure that the supply of vaccine is phased to match demand as closely as possible. Southwark’s local awareness campaign should also be geared to the phased supply of vaccine.
