Further information on diabetes in Southwark

Local data from diabetic registers in general practice indicate that Southwark has a prevalence of 3.2% for known diabetes (although individual practice prevalences range from 1.4% to 6.7%). Altogether there were were 9,294 patients on the diabetic registers in Southwark in early 2006.  The actual prevalence for Southwark is likely to be much higher than this as national figures indicate that there are many people in the community with diabetes that has not been diagnosed.

While the actual number of people being admitted to hospital for diabetes is small, Southwark has considerably higher admission rates for diabetic coma and ketoacidosis (a serious condition that can occur with very high blood glucose levels) in women, at double the national rate.
