Age Structure
The age structure varies greatly by ward.
It is estimated that the population of B&W will grow by 11.4% over the next ten years. Most of this will be in babies and young children (0-9 year-olds) and 30 to 64 year-olds.
Ethnicity
Approximately 59% of the population of Borough & Walworth are white, 27% are Black and 6% Asian. The ethnic composition of the area varies by ward. In Cathedrals 65.7% of the population are white and 17.7% are Black. In Faraday, 51.8% of the population are white and 35.4% are Black. Chaucer has a relatively large Asian community (11.1%) compared to the rest of Southwark (4.1%).
Education
In 2005, two schools in B&W (Notre Dame and St Saviour’s) achieved higher results than the borough and national averages, and two schools (Geoffrey Chaucer and Walworth) achieved results that were lower. The school with the best results for GCSE/GNVQ 5+ A*-C in 2005 was Notre Dame School with 60%.
Unemployment
Generally higher than Southwark as a whole, which itself is higher than nationally. Job seekers claimant rates were higher then the Southwark rate in Faraday, East Walworth and Newington wards, and lower in Cathedrals and Chaucer.
Faraday had the highest rate (6.6 per 1000 working population — Jan 2005).
Crime
In 2005 there were high levels of reported crimes of burglary, robbery, drug offences and violence against the person in Borough & Walworth compared to the whole of the area covered by the Metropolitan Police, and the borough average. Within the locality the crime rates varied greatly by area:
