Deprivation
In general the Locality comprises areas that are among the 30% most deprived in the country, but with two pockets of relative affluence – the riverside area just west of Southwark Cathedral and the area around Trinity Square in Chaucer Ward. Faraday and East Walworth have the highest proportion of very deprived areas - part of the latter bordering Burgess Park being among the most deprived 10% in the country.
Housing tenure
As with Southwark as a whole, B&W has a high proportion of homes rented either from the Council or other social landlord. In Faraday, 78.6% of homes are rented from the Council or other social landlord and only 11.8% of homes are owned (the lowest home ownership in the whole of Southwark). Conversely in Cathedrals, 57.7% are rented from the Council or other social landlord and 22.8% are owned.
The national average for home ownership is 68%.
Overcrowding
In the 2001 census, 31% of homes in B&W were defined as overcrowded – the highest proportion of all the localities in Southwark. All wards within B&W had a greater percentage of homes overcrowded than the Southwark average, with Chaucer having the highest percentage.
