The prescribing of opiate-substitute medication is undertaken initially to provide some degree of stability for a client who is physically addicted to opiates. Immediately following stabilisation, staff will work with the client to develop an integrated treatment and care plan, with the ultimate goal of full recovery from drug dependence.
Substitute prescribing - and subsequent longer-term management - can be undertaken at one of the higher-level specialist services such as the SLAM Community Drug and Alcohol Team, or by a General Practitioner with support from specialist Primary Care services as and when required. (Further details of specialist Primary Care services are available on the General Practitioners page)
