Local people who are worried about breast, ovarian and bowel cancer in their families can now be find out their personal risk of developing cancer by using a new service which was launched recently at Walworth Clinic on Walworth Road and Black Cancer Care in Denmark Hill.
What to expect
People can see a specialist nurse and discuss their family history of breast, ovarian or bowel cancer and have their risk of developing cancer assessed using an innovative new computer programme.
At their appointment they will also be given specially tailored health advice and, where necessary, the service will help to arrange screening tests and referrals to the Guy’s and St Thomas’ Clinical Genetics Department.
Catherine Caulfield, Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist for the programme, said:
The aim of the project is to make cancer risk advice more accessible by running the clinics near people’s houses and allowing people to book themselves in for an appointment without first seeing their GP.
