Chlamydia screening

Chlamydia is the most common and rapidly increasing sexually transmitted infection and now infects over one in five men aged 20-24 and at least one in ten young women, especially teenagers. Although often without symptoms, it can lead to several female health problems — from pelvic pain and inflammation, to blocked tubes, ectopic pregnancy or infertility.

Easy and simple test

Simply go to the pharmacy and pick up a urine test kit, which contains instructions. You can also order a free test kit online at www.checkurself.org. Return the sample to the pharmacy who will send it to a lab for analysis. The pharmacist will also offer you free condoms which is the best protection you can take against chlamydia. The results will be sent to an address of your choice or you can choose to be notified by telephone within 3 working days.

What to do if you test positive for chlamydia

The local chlamydia screening officer is informed, and they will contact you. You will be offered free antibiotic treatment, which you can pick up from a local pharmacist. You can speak privately to a pharmacist and they can advise you if your partner may need to be treated as well.

Alternatively you can go to any local sexual health clinic, or to GUM (genitourinary)clinics at local hospitals, sometimes known as GUM (genito urinary medicine) clinics.

We also have a leaflet for you to download which will give you more detailed information about chlamydia.
